This week:
Examination of a variety of topics pertaining to headaches

We continue our discussion of migraine headaches, this week considering prophylactic therapy for frequent sufferers.

A 48 year-old office worker you have been seeing as a patient over the last 5 years for classic migraines visits you after her last migraine.. She gets her migraines approximately once a month, and it requires her to miss work about 6 times (days) per year. She is interested in prophylactic therapy.

  1. Are there indications for the prophylactic therapy of migraine headaches?
  2. How effective is prophylaxis for migraine headaches? Why not start prophylaxis?
  3. Would you start prophylactic therapy for this patient?
