The lipophilicity of THC affects the distribution pattern of THC over time. What organs does THC penetrate first? Does THC accumulate in any tissues?
THC initially penetrates tissues and organs with high vascularity such as the liver, jejunum, spleen, heart, lung, kidney, mammary gland, placenta, adrenal cortex, muscle, thyroid and pituitary gland, and this results in a rapid decrease of the plasma concentration of THC.Over time, significant accumulation occurs in tissues with less vascularity and eventually in fat. Fat is the major long-term storage site. It is unknown if the THC is stored in fat as unaltered THC or as a THC hydroxy metabolite or another form.
